A Child's Day - 5 years old

Clock

9:00 - Upon arrival Jack is greeted at the door with a firm handshake and a warm personalized greeting. This greeting may be in English or French. He responds in kind, and takes care of his outerwear, in the vestibule and dons his inside shoes or slippers. He enters the classroom to begin his day.

Clock

9:30 - Jack is working on an addition problem with the Golden Beads. Feeling hungry, he places his work card on his rug, and invites a friend to have snack with him. They wash their hands, and serve themselves whole wheat pita bread, with hummus, and fresh strawberries and bananas.

Clock

10:15 - Jack notices that one of his teachers is sitting on the continent rug quietly humming a song, and lighting a candle – an invitation to the children to come to group. He washes his dishes, and comes to the rug. He enjoys a French lesson with his friends. Today, they are discussing La Famille (the family). After some French songs, the children watch the teacher’s hands carefully as she silently signs the letters of their name – a signal that the lesson is over. Jack signs back the teacher’s name, goes to the library, and quietly reads a book about Mozart.

Clock

11:00 - Jack chooses to finish labeling his map of Asia. Uncertain of some of the labels of countries, he goes to a friend for help. The friend leaves her work and joins him at his work rug. They work together for 20 minutes.

Clock

11:30 - Jack notices some friends in the yoga area, trying out some newly presented poses. He asks if he may join them, and they enjoy yoga together for a period of time.

Clock

11:50 - Hearing the quiet music indicating that it is time to clean up, Jack helps to push in chairs and fold work rugs, and joins his friend on the continent rug. After a few minutes of quietly listening to Mozart’s concerto, with closed eyes, the children are invited to get ready for outside play.

Clock

12:45 - The children take a vote and decide that it is a good day for a picnic lunch. They clean up the playground, and prepare the picnic table for lunch.

Clock

1:30 - Jack prefers to read quietly to himself, instead of joining his friends for stories. While the younger children get ready for nap, Jack makes a plan with some of his friends for the afternoon work period. They decide to make ‘mammal’ charts, working steadily for half an hour, before deciding that it is time for an afternoon snack.

Clock

3:00 - Jack prepares to go outside for a pinecone fetching expedition. After building quite a mountain with his friends, his mother arrives to take him home.
